Throw a happy day for your pup with this simple homemade cake made from safe, natural stuff. It’s quick to whip up and perfect for sharing a fun moment together.
I made this for my dog’s birthday once and now it’s our go-to. It feels good celebrating with something healthy we made ourselves.
Ingredients
- Eggs: fresh ones bind everything and add protein
- Ground cinnamon: brings a warm, gentle flavor with a fresh scent
- Whole wheat flour: packed with fiber and nutrients, get finely ground, fresh stuff with nothing extra added
- Fresh apple: shredded finely to add texture and a bit of natural sweetness, crisp ones like Gala or Fuji work best
- Unsweetened applesauce: adds moisture and natural sweetness, pick the kind without sugar or preservatives
How To Make It
- Mix Dry Stuff First
- In a big bowl, stir together the whole wheat flour and cinnamon until smooth and lump-free to get a soft texture later.
- Whisk Wet Ingredients
- Beat the eggs until a little frothy, then add the applesauce and mix well to get a moist mix with some air in it.
- Add Apple
- Fold the shredded apple into the wet mix carefully so it stays light and fluffy.
- Bring It All Together
- Slowly pour the wet mix into the dry bowl and gently fold until just combined. If it seems too thick, add a bit of water so it pours but isn’t runny.
- Get The Pan Ready
- Line a 6-inch round pan with parchment paper and grease it lightly. This makes it easy to take the cake out and keeps the edges clean.
- Bake It
- Pour the batter in and smooth the top. Bake at 350°F for about 25 minutes. Stick a toothpick in to check if it’s done; it should come out clean without wet batter.
- Cool Down
- Let the cake reach room temp before serving or adding any dog-friendly frosting you want.
Cinnamon is my favorite here because it adds a nice smell without being too strong. Seeing my dog enjoy this made me realize homemade treats really beat store ones. It was a small party full of tail wags and happy licks.
Keep It Fresh
Put leftovers in an airtight box in the fridge and eat within three days to keep it moist. You can freeze small pieces for up to two months too. Just thaw in the fridge before giving it.
Swap Ideas
Try finely ground oats instead of whole wheat flour if your dog needs gluten-free. Use mashed banana instead of applesauce for a different sweet flavor. Always check with your vet when trying new things.
How To Serve
Give it as is or add a bit of plain Greek yogurt or peanut butter that’s safe (no xylitol) for a special treat. You can cut it into fun shapes with cookie cutters for parties.
This dog cake is a loving treat that blends healthy ingredients, yummy taste, and celebration in every bite.
